LoDo Lights is a public/private project commissioning contemporary light art installations in historic places

The LoDo Lights project began in the Fall of 2007 to commission contemporary light art media in outdoor historic places.   Diane Huntress lead this innovative effort.  For this concept to be realized, private and public entities collaborated.  A 501(c)3, the Lower Downtown Neighborhood Association enthusiastically supported the concept and became the fiscal conduit for the project.  No less than six sites have been approved by the LoDo Design Review Board for future light art in Lower Downtown Denver.

The first site on Manny's Bridge at 1400 Wynkoop St., was chosen to celebrate the 150th birthday of the City of Denver in 2008.   The energy and attention of the City and LoDo were concentrated on the tremendously successful 2008 Democratic National Convention held in August of 2008.  The best thing happened after that when the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs completed the funding for the art at this site.  Coordinator, Rudi Cerri, worked with the project art adviser, Carol Keller, in the artist selection process. The Speer Bridge Art Panel completed the process by selecting Colorado artist, Virginia Folkestad.  Her work,  Current (Cubed) was dedicated March 6, 2009.

Inspiration for this project came from Turin, Italy:

Luci d'artista has celebrated 10 years of installations in Turin. Organizers there have tracked increased interest in contemporary art, light media, increased visitors to the City, as well as, increased hotel and restaurant bookings during the exhibition.
